Dr. Sushovan Banerjee is a physician from Bolpur, West Bengal, India. Known as Ek Takar Daktar (one rupee doctor) for treating patients for Re. 1, he was conferred the Padma Shri honour by the Government of India in 2020.
Banerjee did his graduation from the RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata and post-graduation from in Pathology from University of Calcutta with gold medal distinction. He went to London for a diploma in Hematology.
After completing his diploma, he worked as a senior registrar for four years before returning to Bolpur for helping people in his native place, Bolpur. He was a Congress MLA from Birbhum district in 1984. For the past 50+ years, he has been treating patients for just Re. 1, thereby earning the moniker of Ek Takar Daktar.
In 2020, he was conferred the Padma Shri honour by the Government of India for his contributions to the medical field. His name has been included in Guinness Book of World Records in July 2020, as the doctor, who treated the maximum number of patients in his lifetime. He has treated around 200 patients per day for his medical profession since last 57 years.
